The major activities of the holiday are to attend a special mass service and then to have the graves of your relatives blessed by a priest. People will leave flowers, usually pansies or chrysanthemums, on the grave sites as well.
An interesting tradition persists of hollowing out sugar beets and carving scary faces on them, much like is done to pumpkins on Halloween in other lands. A candle is then placed inside the beet, which itself is placed in a window. The idea originally was to scare away evil spirits.
